Readers of this blog know we are big fans of industrial design and product ergonomics...something that for the most part has been missing in the world of HVAC - lets see - forever! (see our photo album on industrial design in the side column and read our web featured article called "Tower of Babble"). Product developers could learn a thing or two from world famous Bang & Olufsen and Samsung who have just launched their new cell phone the Serene. Most early discussions around this product will be abouts its $1,275 price tag but just wait and watch the ripple effect in the cell phone business. According to a recent business article, "cell phone accessories bring in $1 billion a year at the retail level in the US and the market is growing 10-15 percent annually." Again, to remind readers, Americans spend more money on pet care and cosmetics than on their own indoor environments...and now they can spend $1,275 on a cell phone. Good marketing (pet care, cosmetics and cell phones) will outsell great (HVAC) engineering any day of the week...at least in North America.
