Good Design

  • "In any industry, one of the most important and difficult tasks is to explain a nuanced process to someone unfamiliar with the field. At its grass roots, design is a process like many others; it has theories, strategies and examples that can be explained on a general level. It’s not a matter of what type of information is given, but rather how it is presented and to what type of audience." Speaking Design to Non-Designers, IDSA

  • Shelter
Shelter is an attempt to document a personal journey from chronic illness, confinement, and the threat of death in the polluted environment of a decrepit American East Coast to the sanctuary of a simple and practical non-toxic home. The personal diary of one disabled person's search for a practical means to something most Americans take for granted but which a small overlooked minority here struggle against astronomical odds and a compulsively Malthusianist society for; simple safe shelter.

This site provides free information for architects, building designers, students and anyone else interested in energy efficient and sustainable design.
  • MRT
The mission of this site is to raise the awareness of the term mean radiant temperature and its effect on human thermal comfort. The site should appeal to both the design professional and to the homeowner who is interested in having a warm home with low energy bills. So there is no confusion from the start, it is the opinion of this site that the mean radiant temperature of a space is the single most important criteria in determining thermal comfort of a person within that space (assuming that humidity, air movement and air infiltration are within normal ranges).

  • Her Home
In January 2003, Linda Reimer, president of Design Basics, recognized a need to publish a magazine for women in the dreaming or planning stage of building a new home or remodeling their present home. Because research shows 80% of homebuilding and remodeling decisions are made by women, she was amazed there wasn't a single women's magazine on the newsstand at the time with this focus. It didn't take long for Linda's vision to become concrete. The first issue of Her Home was launched in September of 2003. From the start, Linda's goal was to provide practical information and a wealth of ideas to help women make these major decisions

10th Global Engineering Conference - HVAC Systems Targeted Towards an Aging Population

Thanks and congratulations to the entire conference staff from Carrier Corporation and HPAC Engineering for holding an outstanding Event at Caesars’ Palace in Las Vegas Nevada. With over 700 attendees from 19 countries it was truly an international event featuring presentations on sustainability as it relates to the design and construction of buildings.

Attendees of the Global Engineering Conference acquired Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by participating in the various workshops and other events at the conference. Continuing Education Units were offered according the standards of the International Association for Continuing Education & Training (IACET).

Pennsylvania Library A Must Read

Learning_policy

"Reduction of air infiltration through the use of concrete walls and insulated windows will significantly reduce operating costs and enhance indoor air quality and maximize natural daylighting. Low-E double-glazing; energy efficient mechanical systems, including radiant floor heating and operable windows; and the possible use of a geothermal heating system will also contribute to a LEED rating." Excerpt from Frederic Schwartz Selected to Design Pennsylvania Library Openness and connection to nature, as well as historic relevance, were important factors for the design jury.

Origins of Ondol

C_hanok

“Gudeul refers to an under-ground heating system, or to the floor or room that is heated by the system. Folklore expert Son Jin-tae presumes that “gudeul” originates from “guun dol,” or “baked stones.” “Ondol,” or warm stone, was created by a combination of Chinese characters to describe “gudeul” before hangul was invented.” Excerpt from A warmer backside for Asia by You Sang-chul, Asia news editor at the JoongAng Ilbo., Copyright by Joins.com, Inc.  Photo Credit: Korea Tourism Organization, All Rights Reserved

RBc; History shows the Koreans using this style of heating over 23 centuries ago. As noted by Wendy Croix, Interior Design School Review Columnist on a Business Week interview with Korean design professor Lee Kun Pyo, the, “Traditional Korean homes, even the poorest, have heated flooring--the “ondol gudeul” --an interior feature Western designers now think of as a luxury for upscale homes.”

This is another example of us North American’s taking the most basic stuff - make it expensive and tag it as a luxury item…it just doesn’t have to be this way.

Wonderful Words from Crazy Stable..."You know what I like? June. I really like June...when "drafty" means "breezy."

Radiatorcat_1

"We have de-facto "zoned heating." The first floor is at 60, the second is at 70, and the third must be pushing 80 unless I open windows. The cats come up here and sack out like Ipanema sunbathers, while the ground-floor apartment (poor Tenant!) must have its three radiators supplemented with convection space heaters and a hopeful but ineffective ceiling fan just to be tolerable." Excerpt from Crazy Stable

RBc: Crazy Stable is a must read blog - enjoy.
